Hello, Readers! Welcome back to another article! Or, if you’re new here, welcome to the Kait The Writer Blog! In this post, I will be writing all about indie books— and why you should read them.
On Instagram, I am a part of a very supportive community of young writers and authors. We all use our own accounts as an outlet to promote our names and books, but we also make sure to support everyone else too. It’s like a constant flow of marketing.
Two of my indie author friends, Olivia Bennett and Brittney Kristina, created the Indie Author Readathon for the whole month of July. If you’re on Instagram, be sure to follow it! (@indie.author.readathon) I was immediately excited about this idea of theirs, and I’m currently participating in it. They’re creating activities and challenges revolving around supporting indie books of many genres. They’ve also made a thing called Spotlight Saturdays, where there will be a post all about a certain indie author every week. And I’m so excited for this one because I was the first Spotlight! I got to share why I write and what I’m currently writing (so if you want to know about my new book, go check it out). I love the creativity in all of this and the purpose behind it. It’s a fun way of encouraging readers to read indie books and promote indie authors at the same time.
So, what is an indie author? An indie author is—well, an author. That’s it. The label indie is just short for independent. Independent authors aren’t affiliated with any publishing houses—which basically means they do it all on their own. We’re in charge of printing, marketing, and selling our books. It can be exhausting sometimes to always show off and talk about your book, but it is nice to have control of everything.
Indie authors are real authors, and indie books are good books, too. I feel like many non-writers think of indie authors as writers who can’t afford publishing with a company or people who just want to be writers. We are writers, and believe it or not, most of us choose to self-publish.
A lot of my author friends published their first works at a young age as I did.
I think supporting and recognizing self-published authors is important for many reasons. A big reason is the fact that these writers are working hard every day to get their names and books out there. Promoting their books to readers is their business. And personally, I love to support entrepreneurs and anyone with dedication and passion for their business.
Below I created a list of eleven indie books(because I couldn’t just choose ten) written by my writer friends. If you click a book, you’ll be directed to another site where you can buy it.
